Training Workshop Descriptions

The Prevent Child Abuse CA Training (PCA CA) Department offers a wide range of high quality, interactive workshops that are designed to enhance the skills and knowledge of professionals and paraprofessional dedicated to the field of child abuse and neglect prevention.

Many of the workshops listed below are available at no cost to PCA CA AmeriCorps Partner Agencies. The workshops are available to PCA CA partner agencies and other interested agencies on a fee-for-service basis. Please see Training Fees for additional information.

Current Workshops

Active Citizens - A one-day workshop created to meet the AmeriCorps program\'s member development objectives as they relate to the citizenship initiative. Through lively discussions and small-group activities, participants will enhance their knowledge of American history and government, engage in civil rights debates, increase awareness of their rights and responsibilities, and learn ways to be effective citizens in their communities.

Child Development and Parent-Child Interaction - This one-day training highlights the elements of a healthy parent-child relationship during the first years of a child’s life. In this workshop, participants will consider key aspects of brain development and examine how correctly reading a young child’s engagement and disengagement cues can support healthy attachment styles. During this interactive class, participants will explore the nine indicators of temperament and their connection to the parent-child relationship and will also review a strategic framework for identifying healthy and unhealthy relationships between parent and child. Participants will have multiple opportunities to practice parent education and observation skills in a variety of activities such as small group role-plays.

Conflict Resolution and Communication Skills - A one-day training that provides opportunities for participants to assess their conflict resolution skills, explore techniques for handling conflicts, and practice effective intervention techniques through engaging activities. The training is presented in a fun, interactive setting and offers practical applications to enable participants to better handle conflict in both their professional and personal lives.

Cultural Awareness - A one-day training where participants explore and understand various cultures and learn how to adapt to today’s diverse workforce. Through hands-on activities and small group exercises, participants address stereotypes and increase their awareness and appreciation of the value of diversity.

Family Violence - This half-day training will teach participants how to recognize symptoms of violence in the home, identify different types of abuse, understand the cycle of violence, and comprehend the effects of family violence on children. Participants will increase their knowledge regarding available referrals and resources for victims of domestic violence, crisis intervention strategies (creating safety plans), and the importance of advocacy.

Professional Boundaries and Confidentiality - This half-day training is designed to assist family support workers in honoring a family’s rights. The issue of professional boundaries and confidentiality is critical for family support workers, who often encounter sensitive issues working closely with children and families. This training facilitates the family support worker’s understanding of the importance of professional boundaries and emphasizes the principles of family-centered and strength-based service.
