The History of Prevent Child Abuse California

In the early 1980s, experts from the field of child abuse prevention, along with local child abuse prevention and treatment advocates, recognized a need to build a statewide coalition to strengthen California’s approach to child abuse prevention. This group founded and incorporated the California Consortium to Prevent Child Abuse whose name was later changed to Prevent Child Abuse California (PCA CA).

Prevent Child Abuse California is the state chapter of Prevent Child Abuse America, whose purpose is to represent a national movement to eradicate child abuse and neglect throughout the United States. PCA CA has a presence in all 58 California counties as either a network of partnerships or a funded program.

The progress made in California’s child abuse prevention efforts over the past two decades has been substantial: PCA CA has been in the forefront of legislative advocacy, provided training and support for those who work with and care for children, advocated for funding child abuse and neglect prevention endeavors, and developed and implemented a statewide network of child abuse prevention programs.
